Today is my mother’s birthday. Look at her. Look at how adorable and happy she is. She has given me/continues to give me so much I can’t even begin to thank her.
She doesn’t take things too seriously, she would want me to tell you all this is her 38th birthday (and she looks good so you would believe it). She loves to dance (she was Miss Cumbia Queen 1976 in her home town), she likes to play practical jokes, and yell at the TV and tell everyone how unrealistic things are but will still watch the show. She’s not afraid to really tell you how it is and she’ll even throw in a sway of the head for good measure so you know she means business. She’s a thrifty, thrifty shopper and loves antique stores and other places she can haggle (and she will haggle with you). She’s a woman of incredible faith and I’m positive her prayers have more influence on God than most sitting cardinals. She is beautiful and kind and so so so giving and one time in Rome, this restaurant entertainer flirted with her so much we still tease her about it to this day and we have his free CD with “with love to Eva xoxoxoxo Umberto” on it. She speaks English with an accent to foreigners and when I was little she would give me the salt off her margarita glass so I would shut up and she could go back to laughing with her friends.
I love her so much and I hope she knows, even though she misses her own mother every day, she is the best mother out there.
Happy Birthday Mama!
It’s odd seeing a place from your childhood in this partly eerie and nostalgic type of video. I had some really great memories of this place; being one of the top students in the weekly multiplication tests for two years (all the way up to the 20s) we got to go to joyland for the day, church trips, family trips. It was always fun and as a child the rides were exciting and scary and always adventure. I’m sad to see it fall into such disarray as there isn’t much in south central Kansas that can replace it.Tristeza Não Tem Fim of the Day: “No Joy”: A joyless visit to the abandoned Joyland Amusement Park in Wichita, Kansas.

This is my grandmother, My Mama Fifi, as we called her. She was lovely and poised and hilarious and pious and hard working (as most grandmothers are). My mom, brother, and I lived with her and my grandfather while my parents were separated most of my young life. I took trips with her and my aunt to visit family in LA and Las Vegas and El Paso and Denver. I would call her on my walks in between classes while I was at school and she would give me advice and tell me what they were eating for lunch and how they were going to work in the garden later. She sent me a Christmas card in the middle of March along with $20 before I went to visit my cousin in LA for spring break and told me to “have an ice cream” with it. Her and my grandfather would fight in Spanish but it never lasted very long and everyone got over it quickly which is how I grew up thinking that’s how people argue, they get it out passionately, and then they love quickly. She had a tendency to set plastic near a hot stove and set something on fire, not because she was absent minded as she was getting older but because she was doing a million other things at once while she was cooking, so the thought of it makes me smile. She took care of me and babied me and my brother a little bit more than her other grandchildren but she loved us all so much. She loved holidays, every and all holidays. She had silly, felt, American Flag, top hats for the Fourth of July; she made red, white, and green necklaces and and bracelets for the sixteenth of September (Mexican independence day); she would always have a halloween costume on while she passed out candy; without fail, she would send us cards and candy on Valentines day; and she always decorated the house for Easter and made sure everyone got a present, even if it was just a box of peeps. She posed for (almost) every photograph and would go and get her hair done down the street weekly. She loved costume jewelry and big rings and having her nails painted and lips red. She, more than anyone, always pushed me toward my dreams (whatever they were at the moment) and even now, as I flounder about life, I think she would be the first to say it’s ok to do whatever it is I really want to do and not worry about practicality. She had faith in me, as she had so much faith in her own life and so much love for everyone in her family. She died, four years ago today, and there isn’t a moment that goes by that I don’t wish I could call her up and ask for her advice and just hear her comforting voice again, saying, “Mi hija, everything will be ok.”
I miss you, Mama Fifi.

We had a water pipe freeze and break in our bathroom - so we have decided to make lemonade out of lemons and redo a bunch of other stuff in there.
Here are a few pix of the work in progress.
This is the Fugger that started it all:
Plummer had to tear up wall to find it though - it was behind the shower wall:
The Restoration Company said if we took out this window they would tile from the tub to the ceiling
So we did….
Next…. we took out the old sink/vanity….
Discovered the wall was not flush… and the ceiling of the stairs is making this wall a little funky
so we built a new wall
We took the old Mirror lights down…
these are up right now mirror to come…
and then the last thing we have done at this point is rip up the old Linoleum..
I’ll post some more once its done but like I said.. its a work in progress….
